We will recover our sense of wonder
and our sense of the sacred only if we appreciate the universe
beyond ourselves as a revelatory experience of that numinous
presence whence all things come.
--Thomas Berry
My
art work is rooted in The New Story of Creation, the stunning story
of the evolutionary Universe as it is presented by cultural historian
Thomas Berry and others. Earth’s beauty as the primary revelation
of God inspires my art work; the loss of this beauty throughout
the whole community of life on our home planet fires in me the
desire for my art, in some way, to serve Earth’s urgent need for
healing and to participate in the deepening global realization
that contemplation of the sacred Universe leads us to the “numinous
presence whence all things come.” Here we discover how to respond
to Earth’s beauty, and to its cries. Within this New Story, the
smaller stories of ordinary experience are told, offering me imagery
for other art works: crows in snow, an old woman with failing memory
gathering a bouquet of autumn leaves, a child balancing herself
on a fence, the wonders of the night sky.
